New Computer

10 Mar 2015

Posted by Wastelander521 in General Discussion

Hello everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a new computer for school and gaming. I figure that since I am going to be making games, I should be able to run them at their best, right? So here is a link to my current build:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: Avexir Core series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 2GB WINDFORCE Video Card
Case: CFI Diablo LT ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)

So I basically have 2 options. Upgrade my current build with amd parts (much cheaper), or build an entire new cumputer that is intel based. I am more leaning towards the latter, and as such, here is the build for the intel system:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($279.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($144.98 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory  ($149.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($89.30 @ Amazon)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB ACX 2.0 Video Card  ($549.00 @ B&H)
Case: NZXT Phantom 820 (Black) ATX Full Tower Case  ($199.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: EVGA 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($134.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer  ($19.79 @ OutletPC)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($87.75 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1845.76
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I just wanted to get some feedback on this build, seeing as I have only build 1 computer and am still new to the DIY world. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Some notes:

  • I do not plan to overclock right off the bat, but will in the future
  • I chose that video card due to performance and nvidia technologies
  • I chose such a large power supply becuase the difference in price per waytt is not large and I WILL be adding parts over the next years.
  • I like everything about this case; except the size. It is a little big, but have EVERY feature I want in a case
  • Windows 8.1 becuase it handles SSD'd well and because I want to trust Microsoft again :(
